Seismic Restraint

Seismic Restraint Compliance

km-mec design, review installations and engineering documentation to ensure the compliance and safety of building services to meet seismic restraint compliance. Seismic restraint has come to the fore in New Zealand after the recent earthquakes in Christchurch and Wellington, where the failure of non-structural elements (such as ceilings, ducts, pipes and other non-structural building elements) posed a significant risk to human safety.

It’s important to ensure your business's non-structural elements are restrained, not simply from a safety perspective, but also from damage and loss. Building services and other non-structural elements can represent up to 70% of a building's value, not safely and effectively securing these can result in huge losses.

The current Health and Safety at Work Act (2015) which came into force on April 4th, 2016, places significant personal duties on those in positions of responsibility to ensure that their employees and workplaces are given the highest level of protection.

Responsibility for the seismic restraint of non-structural elements within a commercial or industrial facility is often passed on to the installing contractor. Non-structural elements can include mechanical plant, ducting, electrical equipment, plumbing and fire systems, process vessels, and tanks. These may include things such as HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, fire and hydraulics for example.

Whether it is an existing facility or a completely new design, we can tailor our services to suit your business needs. We work closely with our clients to overcome obstacles common with retrofit solutions when it comes to meeting seismic restraint compliance.

We can help with the layout and full design of your system to comply with all building codes and seismic requirements.
