Cheese and Lactose Plant Chemical Storage

Fonterra

  • Location: Edendale, South Island, New Zealand
  • Completed: August 2019
  • Outcome: Regulatory compliance

Project Scope:

  • Front end engineering
  • Process design including piping and instrumentation diagram (P&IDs)
  • Civil and structural design
  • Piping design
  • Tank bunding design
  • Equipment specification
  • Construction management
  • Commissioning support
  • SOPs

km-mec was initially engaged to provide front end engineering and detailed design for the replacement of the existing chemical tanks. The project scope increased to include project and construction management, commissioning support, preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The existing chemical storage facility did not meet the new hazardous substance regulations, health and safety standards and particularly the standards for pressure and process equipment and pressure piping. The chemical tanks are categorised as stationary bulk containers in terms of health and safety and therefore required additional containment through bunding.

Marthinus Hendriks – Fonterra - Engineering Project Manager – South Island Regional Projects (SIRP)

km-mec was already engaged when I stepped in as Project Manager. I had previous experience working with them and knew they were competent in HAZCHEM requirements.

They provided high-quality detailed design information and specifications to assist with the tendering process, which was of great assistance to derive an accurate scope and budget for the project. This resulted in us delivering a project that meets the business case in scope, time, quality and budget. Accurate upfront planning and design minimise the risk of significant variations.

Because they’re familiar with the latest in compliance and regulations you can hit the ground running. They work in well with the testing and regulations certifiers, consulting with them as a key stakeholder from the start and throughout the process. They also have a good working relationship with the likes of WorkSafe. They’re not afraid to challenge the project team to ensure the design is 100% compliant and workable for maintenance and operational staff.

km-mec is very client focussed and always kept us, their main stakeholder, up with the play and are easy to work, and communicate with. They spend quality time looking into any project and do their research. Within their team, they have the capability as engineers and they’re small enough as a business to respond quickly which makes them a nimble asset on a project. If you want to fast track a project, they have the capability and size to complete design work promptly.

The whole project went smoothly, due to the quality upfront engineering, planning and design. km-mec has a good relationship with its stakeholders. You can trust them as they ensure they understand the requirements and always keep you informed.
