Sulfuric Acid Storage Facility

Alliance Group

  • Location: Lorneville, South Island, New Zealand
  • Outcome: Regulatory compliance

Project scope:

  • Capital cost estimation
  • Process design including piping and instrumentation diagram (P&IDs)
  • Civil and Structural design
  • Piping design
  • Equipment specification
  • Equipment procurement
  • Contractor tendering and engagement
  • Construction management
  • Commissioning support
  • Preparation of SOPs

Alliance Group engaged km-mec to provide capital cost estimation, concept design, followed by detailed design and construction management for the replacement of the existing sulfuric acid chemical storage facility. The site uses sulfuric acid for rendering, the production of animal pelts, and control of pH in their wastewater treatment facility.

The sulfuric acid storage facility required an upgrade to meet new hazardous substances regulations and the Health and Safety Act.

The site had a number of constraints which had to be considered and incorporated into the design some of which included:

  • The site was a Brownfield site
  • Space constraints due to existing structures
  • The site was a fully operational facility
  • There was limited access for truck delivery
  • No reliable records for existing underground services

Overcoming the constraints meant working closely with the site team to understand their daily operational requirements. By gaining a full understanding of their operation and building trust with the site team we were able to overcome the constraints to successfully deliver the project.

Testimonial

Greg Paterson - Alliance Group

'We engaged km-mec to work with us on the design and installation of our upgraded Sulfuric Acid Storage Facility as they had recently completed a facility at a local Fonterra site, where they managed the project well and I heard from the team there that they had delivered an excellent facility. Kevin and his team are professional in their approach to working with clients. Since working with km-mec on the Sulfuric Acid Storage Facility design, we have engaged Kevin and his team on a number of other projects.

Working with local engineers is the ideal option for us as a business. His team bring a degree of professionalism into our business as Chartered Engineers. They’re prompt, offer advice and provide constructive answers to our questions. Face-to-face meetings and working onsite with the team makes a big difference to our business in developing robust solutions.

We engage several mechanical engineering companies. Kevin has a strong understanding of the regulations governing industry facilities and does not rush to conclusions. The km-mec team are happy to give advice and Kevin is building a skilful team around him. As a business, his portfolio is encompassing more avenues than just pure mechanical engineering, and it’s setting km-mec up to be a real asset to several local industries.

I’d recommend Kevin and his team; give him a call, discuss your options, and see how he can assist you.'
